GSLC BOOK CLUB
The Girls of Atomic City - by Denise Kiernan
The incredible story of the young women of Oak Ridge, Tennessee, who unwittingly played a crucial role in one of the most significant moments in U.S. history.
The Tennessee town of Oak Ridge was created from scratch in 1942. One of the Manhattan Project’s secret cities, it didn’t appear on any maps until 1949, and yet at the height of World War II it was using more electricity than New York City and was home to more than 75,000 people, many of them young women recruited from small towns across the South. Their jobs were shrouded in mystery.
They all knew something big was happening at Oak Ridge, but few could piece together the true nature of their work until the bomb "Little Boy" was dropped over Hiroshima, Japan, and the secret was out. The shocking revelation: the residents of Oak Ridge were enriching uranium for the atomic bomb.
The reverberations from their work there—work they didn’t fully understand at the time—are still being felt today.
We are reading another great book - ready for discussion! Please join us, Sunday, March 16, at 4:00 in the Community Center for casual discussion of "The Girls of Atomic City". We are not deeply structured, but do spend an hour discussing our book of the month. Join us in any month where the book strikes your fancy.

Mid-Week Bible Study
Our Wednesday Evening Bible Study is not meeting during Lent. We have very much enjoyed the study of Luke in the Land by Kristi McLelland. BEGINNING April 23, the Wednesday after Easter, we will begin "The Gospel on the Ground" which is a study of Acts. Luke in the Land led us to the crucifixion of Jesus. The Gospel on the Ground picks up as the gospel begins spreading with the new church. The book is available from your usual book seller. The Gospel on the Ground is also written by Kristi McLelland. Mark you calendars, get a copy of the study book, and plan to join us in the Community Center at 6:30 on April 23.
